Samuel Angeles
“I saw MTC as the best choice for me both financially and because of the variety of opportunities at the college. I was able to self-support myself and prepare for where I am now.”
Sam Angeles knows the importance of making big strides one step at a time. As a first-generation college graduate, the first big step in his journey was enrolling at Midlands Technical College.
When Sam graduated from Spring Valley High School in Columbia, SC, he wasn’t exactly sure what he wanted to do next. Up until that point, his main focus was to be responsible in school.
“I was anxious and unsure about my future and what I wanted to do. My family would tell me to work hard and stay focused. I just knew I wanted to come home with a good report card and make my parents proud.”
With the support of his family, Sam decided to further his education. He became a first-generation college student at Midlands Technical College.
“The transition from high school to Midlands Technical College was smooth. After feeling a little cloudy about the future and wondering how I’d end up in a fulfilling career, I began embracing my goals and breaking barriers.”
MTC presented a clear path for Sam. He began the associate in science degree program with high hopes for the future.
“I met close friends that I still communicate with today. The faculty and staff were both encouraging and supportive. Even when it got tough, the services Midlands Tech provided helped me overcome the challenges. Overall, from all my experiences, I had nothing but positive outcomes during my time at Midlands Tech.”
Sam graduated from MTC with his associate in science degree and transferred seamlessly into the Exercise Science Program at UofSC. He also secured an internship with Gamecock Athletics and the football team.
After graduating with his undergraduate degree, Sam can proudly say that he is now enrolled in the Master of Athletic Training Program at UofSC, which is nationally ranked as the number one sports science institution in the U.S.
“In the words of Nick Bare, ‘Just go one more!’ No matter where you perceive the finish line to be, I learned to go one more. That’s all I ever did.
Sam is currently at the UofSC medical school campus undergoing an intensive cadaver anatomy course. Upon graduating, he plans to work for a collegiate, Major League Soccer, Major League Baseball, or European sports team. He also plans to study the latest research on issues like concussions and contribute to advancements in athletic training.
“I went into Midlands Tech thinking, ‘I’m not sure what’s going to happen.’ And now, here I am getting my Master’s degree!”
As an avid supporter of Midlands Technical College, he encouraged his younger sister to attend MTC. She is currently in the MTC Dental Hygiene Program.
“I saw MTC as the best choice for me both financially and because of the variety of opportunities at the college. I was able to self-support myself and prepare for where I am now.”
