Certificate of Business in Medical Office Administration

Overview

A certificate in medical office administration will jump-start your career at a hospital, outpatient clinic, or group practice. Students will learn essential skills for the healthcare office environment. The focus of the program is solely on clerical/administrative functions and does not include clinical training. Graduates will be equipped to manage tasks such as scheduling, billing, and patient records, making them indispensable to healthcare teams.

Upon completing the Medical Office Administration certificate, students will be able to demonstrate:

  • The ability to interpret and apply various insurance policies, procedures, and regulations using electronic health record systems to ensure accurate billing and coding, scheduling, and record maintenance.

  • The ability to communicate effectively by working collaboratively with healthcare providers, insurance companies, and patients using written, verbal, nonverbal, and interpersonal communication skills.

Students must earn a grade of “C” or better in all of the courses offered within the Business Department for the grade to be counted toward graduation. Specifically, these include courses with the following prefixes: ACC, AOT, ARV, BAF, BUS, CPT, MGT, and MKT.

Patient Access Specialist

This person is responsible for obtaining quality demographic and financial information for customers entering the practice. This person is also responsible for maintaining point-of-service collections and performs quality assurance to ensure prompt payment of patient bills.

The Patient Service Representative (PSR) is the initial contact for all patients and visitors. They must be detailed oriented with good interpersonal skills and have the ability to provide quality customer service. PSRs are responsible for greeting patients and visitors in a professional manner, answering phones, returning calls promptly using excellent customer service skills, scheduling and rescheduling appointments, assisting/directing patients with questions and inquiries, collecting accurate demographic information, entering medical records data and insurance verifications, understanding and being able to explain payment options for patients who are uninsured, and understanding policies and procedures for appropriately checking patients in and out of the medical records system.
