A Little Perspective
Making People Good at Doin' Stuff
Those words are from our Automotive Technology Director Justin Courtney. He spoke last month as we celebrated six apprentices who signed onto jobs at car dealerships. Justin's easily understood phrase has stuck with me ever since.
Automotive apprentices learn how to be good at taking cars apart, fixing things, and then putting it all back together. Automotive technicians are highly skilled, in high demand, they have high mobility, and they earn high wages. It is a far cry from the days when garages were dark, dirty, and dangerous.
For students in each of our skilled trades programs, success looks different. What is the same - learning a skill is one of the most direct and fastest ways to a lucrative career ... whether that means going into information technology to battle viruses that down computers or into mechatronics to keep the equipment running at one of our area manufacturing centers.
No matter the program, we deliver Mavericks who are good at doin' stuff.
So, the next time you are at Dick Dyer Mercedes, Love GMC, or a Jim Hudson dealership, you may see a Maverick under the hood. I hope you will join me in celebrating the six individuals who became the first to take advantage of the new apprenticeship program, made possible by MTC and the South Carolina Automobile Dealers Association.
