Lexington County Council Recognizes MTC President

Midlands Technical College (MTC) President Dr. Ronald L. Rhames was honored during the Lexington County Council’s December 6 meeting. A resolution was presented to Dr. Rhames for being “a driving force in advancing student success and economic development for Lexington County.”

“During my presidency, I have thoroughly enjoyed working with the current and previous Lexington County Council members in advancing higher education,” stated Dr. Rhames. “I cannot thank Beth, Darrell, Scotty, Paul, Debra, Gene, Charlene, Glen, and Todd enough for their commitment to MTC and ensuring the citizens of Lexington County have access to the array of accessible and affordable programs offered at MTC.” 

The Council resolution recognizes that under Dr. Rhames’s leadership, “the institution has experienced tremendous growth in Lexington County with the opening of the Batesburg-Leesville campus in 2008, followed by the Harbison Theatre in 2010. He is the first graduate of a South Carolina technical college to become its president and the first African American president of MTC.”

In August, Dr. Rhames announced his plan to retire by June 2024. He has been a part of MTC for 35 years - two years as a student and 33 as an employee, including eight years as the college president. 

The MTC Commission has retained the Association of Community College Trustees to help lead the search for the college’s seventh president. A presidential profile has been established, and those interested in applying for the position are encouraged to submit materials by January 30, 2024 for consideration.
