Kadejah Pickering was a retail assistant manager for more than 15 years when she sustained a major injury and was no longer able to continue in that line of work. Suddenly, she was faced with the need to make a career change.
“It forced me to re-evaluate everything in my life, one of the most important things being a new career,” said Kadejah.
“I only knew the basics when it came to office systems such as Excel and Outlook,” she said. “In the workforce, things are always changing and evolving. It was important for me to make sure I had the necessary skills to obtain, at the very least, a good position with any company I chose to work with. My goal was to better prepare myself for a great career.”
Knowing she didn’t have the money or the time to spend years in college, Kadejah began looking for options that could quickly get her on track to a new career. That’s when she learned about Midlands Technical College’s QuickJobs certification as an Office Administrative Specialist.
The Office Administrative Specialist Certification is a Corporate and Continuing Education (CCE) program designed for students to build effective office careers by developing their technical expertise and communication skills. Kadejah said the program seemed a perfect fit for her. Although she already had experience in management and human resources, she needed more advanced computer skills to be competitive.

“The QuickJobs program allowed me to acquire the skills to not only gain an entry-level position at any company, but to also feel confident utilizing most computer programs as well as communicating more effectively in the corporate world.”
Taking classes just two or three days a week, Kadejah completed the program in about six months. Kadejah said her investment in the program began paying off immediately. Shortly after finishing her classes, she began making more money in a job that has room for professional growth and promotions.
“Less than a month after receiving my certification, I was offered an office administrative position with a healthcare management company,” she said. “This MTC program allowed me to learn new skills, and it has laid the foundation on which I will build.”
