“Midlands Technical College and the Michelin Technical Scholar Program put me in a job I love.”
During my first visit with my MTC advisor, he suggested I look into the Michelin Technical Scholars Program. The opportunity to gain training for a real job while I was in school was exactly what I was looking for.
"Midlands Technical College and the Michelin Technical Scholar Program put me in a job I love."
I never planned for a career in manufacturing, but after earning my bachelor’s degree in sociology from the University of South Carolina, I was job hunting for two years and couldn’t find a job I liked. I decided to go back to school and earn a degree in a different field – a field that I was confident would have a job for me when I graduated.
During my first visit with my MTC advisor, he suggested I look into the Michelin Technical Scholars Program. The opportunity to gain training for a real job while I was in school was exactly what I was looking for. Michelin paid for school, bought my books and hired me for 20 hours a week as a paid intern, where I learned about the machines they use and how to trouble shoot mechanical and electrical issues.
"Midlands Technical College and the Michelin Technical Scholar Program put me in a job I love."
After a year and a half studying electrical engineering at MTC and interning at Michelin, I started working full time for my company this year. I love it – love that I’m not stuck behind a desk, love that every day is different, that I get to go to work and solve problems. I support the tire building operation at Michelin by troubleshooting any issues that arise and conducting maintenance on our machines. You never know what to expect. It’s dynamic and a great challenge.
For people who are thinking about going back to school to further their careers just do it! Go for it. There’s no point in doing something you’re not happy with when there are opportunities like the ones I found at MTC."
