Frequently Asked Questions
When will the classes meet?
Beginning Class (BC)
(A three-hour e-course is included with your registration and must be completed prior to first class.)
WEEKEND Classes:
Are 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM on Fri. evening and 8:00 AM until 5:00 PM on Saturday AND Sunday.
WEEKDAY Classes:
Are Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday 9:00 AM until 4:00 PM
Intermediate Class (IC)
6:00 PM to 10:00 PM Friday evening and 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM Saturday
Experienced Class (EC)
9:00 AM until 4:00 PM on Sunday
What equipment do I need to bring to class?
The same equipment is needed for the riding sessions in all three class levels.
- DOT approved full or open-face helmet (half-helmets are prohibited)
- Eye protection
- Full-fingered gloves
- Long sleeves
- Long pants
- Footwear that covers the ankles
For classroom sessions, students should have a pen or pencil and a notepad. Please note that this equipment is required for the first riding session.
When is the riding equipment required?
All classes - Riding equipment is not needed for the Friday evening classroom sessions. It is required for all riding sessions on Saturday or Sunday. NOTE: Weekday classes do ride on the first day which is Tuesday.
Do I need to bring a motorcycle to class?
BC - Students do not need to bring a motorcycle to class. Training motorcycles are provided.
IC and EC - Students must provide a street legal, insured, and fully registered motorcycle. The motorcycle will be inspected prior to class and must meet minimum safety requirements to be used in the class.
Can I ride another person's motorcycle in the IC or EC?
IC and EC - A borrowed motorcycle may be used but the student must have written, notarized permission from the owner, and produce the registration form and proof of insurance.
Do I need a license to take the class?
BC - No motorcycle license is needed. Students must meet the eligibility standards required to apply for a license to ride on the street. Students must have a valid driver’s license or learner’s permit.
IC - Students must have a motorcycle learner's permit (for a minimum of 60 days) OR a valid motorcycle license.
EC - Students must have a valid motorcycle license OR a motorcycle learner's permit (for a minimum of
60 days). Learner’s permit operators must provide proof of successful completion of a previous motorcycle class.
Will I get an insurance discount if I take a motorcycle rider class?
The law in SC is that insurance companies may give a discount for persons completing a rider education class. Students who successfully complete any of the three classes are eligible for the insurance discount.
Can a passenger take the class with me?
Passengers are permitted in the EC only. Both the rider and passenger must be fully registered students. Passengers must be able to place their feet on the motorcycle's foot pegs. The rider carrying a passenger MUST have a full motorcycle license, learner’s permit holders are not authorized to have passengers.
I work Friday evening. Can I skip the Friday evening session and start the class when it resumes on Saturday morning?
Students must attend all scheduled sessions of the class for successful course completion. Active riding is not permitted once any portion of the class has been missed.

Motorcycle Student Requirements
Beginner’s Class (BC)
- Minimum of 15 years of age. (Students under the age of 18 years must have parental consent.)
- Able to ride a bicycle.
- Available to attend Friday evening and all day Saturday and Sunday.
- A limited number of weekday classes are available.
- Valid driver’s license or equivalent
Intermediate Class (IC)
- Motorcycle learner's permit for at least 60 days OR valid motorcycle license.
- Capable of good clutch/throttle control on a motorcycle. (Mileage is dependant on your personality.)
- Can provide a street legal, insured and fully registered motorcycle. (NOTE: scooters are permitted if properly licensed as a motorcycle - mopeds are prohibited.)
- Available to attend Friday evening and all day Saturday.
Experienced Class (EC)
- Valid motorcycle license OR have held a motorcycle learner's permit for at least 60 days and provide proof of successful completion of previous motorcycle course.
- Can provide a street legal, insured and fully registered motorcycle. (NOTE: scooters are permitted if properly licensed as a motorcycle - mopeds are prohibited.)
- Available all day on Sunday.
