What is Academic and Career Advising? 

All admitted students will work with an Academic and Career Advisor to plan their path to graduation — and make sure that path lines up with their overall career goals. After the first advising session, students will be assigned to an Academic and Career Advisor who supports their School of Study. Students will continue to work with this advisor every semester. The MTC Academic and Career Advisor is the go-to person for degree planning, registration support, and connections to resources that will help students become an MTC graduate. View the different student statuses below to determine how you can connect with an Academic and Career Advisor.

Types of MTC Students

Current/Continuing Students 
A student who is currently attending MTC. Continuing students should schedule an advisement appointment.

New Freshmen Students 
A student who has never attended a college or university. New freshmen students are advised during our Mandatory In-Person Orientation.

Re-admit Students
A student who hasn't attended MTC in over a year. Re-admits are required to re-apply to MTC. Re-admitted students are advised after completing Online New Student Orientation.

Transfer Students
A student who has earned credits from another college or university and is transferring to MTC with the intent to earn a degree, diploma, or certificate. Transfer students are advised during our Mandatory In-Person Orientation.

Transient Students
A student who is currently attending another college and is taking a class at MTC that they want to transfer back to their original institution. Transient students are required to apply to MTC.

Which course delivery is right for you?

On Campus

  • This means...
    • Your course will meet in-person on one of our 7 campus locations.
  • Courses offered in this mode work really well for...
    • A student who:
      • does best with regular structure.
      • prefers live-time interaction with their instructor and classmates.
      • does not feel as tech savvy.
      • sees from their prior courses that they have been most successful with in-person learning.
      • knows they need to be in a classroom environment to focus and succeed.
      • wants in-person access to resources and support (like tutoring, the library, and more) before or after class.
  • Additional items to know...
    • MTC’s expectations regarding social distancing and face coverings remain.
Virtual (Synchronous)
  • This means...
    • This course meets live on regular days and times but meets online using web conferencing software (like Zoom).
  • Courses offered in this mode work really well for...
    • A student who:
      • knows they have reliable technology (not a cell phone) – or can come to campus to use an MTC computer.
      • knows they have reliable internet access – or can come to campus to use MTC's internet.
      • knows they can stay focused without sitting in a classroom.
      • has quiet, uninterrupted space off campus.
      • does best with regular structure.
      • prefers live-time interaction with their instructor and classmates.
  • Additional items to know...
Online (Asynchronous)
  • This means...
    • This course doesn’t have meeting dates and times. Instead, you work on your time (24/7) to meet deadlines, review course content, and complete projects/assignments as outlined in your syllabus.
  • Courses offered in this mode work really well for...
    • A student who:
      • has successfully completed a 100% online (asynchronous) course in the past.
      • is highly independent and self-motivated.
      • does well with time management.
      • will proactively connect with their instructor and resources without being motivated to do so during a class session.
      • cannot designate the same time each day for class.
      • knows they have reliable technology (not a cell phone) – or can come to campus to use a MTC computer.
      • knows they have reliable internet access – or can come to campus to use MTC’s internet.
  • Additional items to know...
Hybrid
  • This means...
    • This course can meet in a variety of formats, oftentimes blending the delivery methods shared above. Pay special attention to day(s) and time(s) when registering or reviewing your syllabus as the course begins.
    • For example, your course could meet some days on campus and some days virtually. It could also meet some days virtually with the remainder of the week as 100% online work.
  • Courses offered in this mode work really well for...
    • A student who:
      • does well with time management and can be flexible with their learning style.
      • operates well with mixed delivery methods.
      • has previously taken a 100% online (asynchronous) course and can self-manage their time.
      • knows they have reliable technology (not a cell phone) they can use to join their class – or can come to campus to use MTC’s computers.
      • knows they have reliable internet access – or can come to campus to use MTC’s internet.
